Heritage and Resilience. The experience of Venice at the 4th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction
The Global Platform for Disaster Reduction, biennial forum, organized by the United Nations, to improve the implementation of disaster risk reduction strategy, is taking place in Geneva on 19-23 May 2013. The Mayor of Venice has been invited to present the experience of Venice.
In 2011, the City of Venice has been recognized by the UNISDR (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction) as a “role model city for cultural heritage protection” and in 2012 the Mayor of Venice, Giorgio Orsoni, has been appointed Europe's first Champion of the UNISDR’s “Making Cities resilient” Campaign on in recognition of his efforts to build resilience to disasters and protect cultural heritage.
The experience of Venice will be presented in a plenary session dedicated to the theme of “Heritage and Resilience”, organized by UNESCO, in order to underline the importance of historic properties and cultural heritage sites, which are increasingly affected by disaster. A proper maintenance of “historical centers” of cities is fundamental also for coping to the needs of social cohesion, liveability of the territories and their economic development. A well maintained and living historic environment is a key factor to strengthen the resilience of a community, especially in front of the big challenges due to the global changes.
CORILA provide technical and scientific support to the Municipality of Venice in the UNISDR’s “Making Cities Resilient” Campaign. Pierpaolo Campostrini, Director of CORILA, will attend the event and will introduce the European project Kulturisk on the culture of risk prevention.
