ADRIPLAN FINAL CONFERENCE: “Planning the Sea Towards an effective Maritime Spatial Planning in the Mediterranean Sea”

The ADRIPLAN Project, funded by the European Union (DG MARE), aims to support a commonly-agreed cross-border Maritime Spatial Planning in the Adriatic-Ionian Region, and outcomes will be presented in the framework of a Final Conference in Venice Italy on 10 July 2015. In the Conference high level invited speakers from European, National and Regional institutions will provide key note presentations, and it will be an occasion to gather public officers and internationally recognized Maritime Spatial Planning experts.

ADRI-PLAN – Adriatic Ionian Maritime Spatial Planningis the project funded by the European Commission – DG MARE under the call (MARE/2012/25) on the theme "Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) in the Mediterranean sea and/or the Black sea". The focus of the proposal is the Adriatic-Ionian Region, as outlined by the recent EU strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR).

The project consortium, leaded by CNR- ISMAR, includes national technical and scientific partners such as the University IUAV of Venice, CONISMA (National Interuniversity Consortium for Marine Sciences ), OGS (National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics) and CORILA that participates as a subcontractor. The international partnership includes partners from Slovenia, Croatia and Greece (eg.  Razvojni Regional Center of Koper , University of Thessaly , the HCMR - Hellenic Center for Marine Research). There is also a number of institutional partners: almost all the Italian regions along the Adriatic- Ionian cost (Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Marche, Molise, Puglia) and several coastal regions of Croatia and Greece, the Venice Port Authority (representing also the NAPA - North Adriatic ports Association). Finally, among the "observers" involved in the project there are the Italian Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, the JRC, the Adriatic -Ionian Euroregion, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Slovenia, the Ministry of Environment Energy and Climate Change of Greece.

The aim of the project is to improve knowledge and develop practical experience in the implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning. The study area is the Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion considered as a whole and a zoom on two focus areas: the Northern Adriatic Sea and the Southern Adriatic- Northern Ionian Sea. The general framework is the Integrated Maritime Policy, based on the eco-systemic approach and on the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC).

The project will start from an Initial Assessment of existing conditions and pressures at Macroregion level for considering then very practical and concrete issues such as the coexistence of conflicting uses of the sea (fisheries, transport, energy, marine protected areas, etc.).

The total project budget is 1.250.000€, the duration of the project is 18 months from 10 December 2013 until 10 June 2015.
